Bed Bugs (or Bedbugs) are small, brown insects that feed on warm blooded animals. Cimex lectularius is the bed bug that feeds on human blood, which can result in itchy, painful reactions to bites.

Bed bugs stay close to a food source, so are found where people tend to rest and sleep, hence the name bed bug. Their resurgence may well be related to a global increase in international travel (bedbugs are known to travel in luggage or clothing).

It is theoretically possible for bedbugs to transmit disease but currently there is no documented evidence of this. More concerning is the irritation and distress they cause, along with the possibility of secondary infection from constant scratching of bed bug bites.

The key to beating the problem, is understanding how you get bed bugs and an awareness of the signs to look for to ensure they are dealt with quickly and effectively once discovered.

High levels of hygiene, deep cleaning and the use of DIY bedbug spray products will help to reduce numbers, however professional treatment is needed to eliminate an infestation.
